NORTH COLLEGE HILL —The 63-year-old North College Hill business owner who was shot during a robbery attempt has died, according to his brother.

Joe Leach, who owned Leach’s Brothers Automotive on West Galbraith Road, was shot Tuesday. The search continues for the gunman.

Police said someone in what’s believed to be a red hoodie sweatshirt fired at Leach, striking him once in the back.

Surveillance video from a nearby business showed the suspect leaving the shop where employees awaited word about Leach’s condition.

Leach underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon and family members spoke with WLWT outside UC Medical Center.

They provided photos of Leach, saying the pictures call to mind a redheaded Santa.

Leach's brother, John, described him as an all-around good guy with drag racing in his blood.

Mostly, people refer to him as Papa Joe. Leach owned the automotive shop since the early '80s.

Police caution whoever shot Leach should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information is asked to call North College Hill Police at 513-521-7171 or CrimeStoppers at 513-352-3040.
