   Homicide Unit Investigation

On June 6, 2007, at 2:25 a.m., Cincinnati Police received a 911 call to 4259 Fergus St. reference a person shot lying in the street. District Five Officers along with Cincinnati Fire Personnel responded and located a black male suffering from gun shot wounds. The victim has been identified as John Harris, male, black, 25 years old born on July 19, 1982. Preliminary investigation reveals that Mr. Harris was a victim of a robbery where his vehicle (Black Chev, Monte Carlo) was stolen. The vehicle has been recovered by District Five Police on Spring Grove Ave parked and unattended.

Redacted from Cincinnati Enquirer Amber Hunt August 6, 2020The crime: Peggy Harris taught her youngest son to steer clear of the neighborhood ruffians, and John Harris listened. He avoided the streets and kept away from drugs.

“He was a voter, a taxpayer. Everything you tell your child to do to live a good life, he did,” Peggy Harris said. “That’s what threw me off so bad. It was so unexpected.”

John Harris – called “Johnny” by those who knew him – was killed during a robbery near his home on June 7, 2007. The slaying was as cowardly as it was pointless: The 24-year-old was shot three times in the back, apparently by someone determined to steal his lemon of a car and a necklace that looked valuable but really wasn’t.

“One of the bullets pierced his heart,” Peggy Harris said.

no one has been arrested in the slaying.
